Good Friends...

"Good Friends are like STARS--you don't always see them, but you always know they're there."

Sometimes, good friends are hard to come by. Luckily, in my life, it seems the opposite is true. My life has been filled with good friends, friends who have helped me through the darkest times, and pushed me when I thought I couldn't go anymore. Friends who have been there through thick and thin, and even through the ugliness that life brings to all of us sometimes. As I look back over my life, I realize that Heavenly Father has always known when I needed a good friend, and put that person in my path at just the right time in my life. Isn't it amazing when you think about how much Heavenly Father loves us, and how he always knows just what we need? We have had the opportunity to move, several times in our marriage. Each ward and community have been an amazing opportunity for us to meet new people, to learn and to grow. Each ward has been wonderful, and each time we think of moving I feel a stab in my heart for the friends we will leave behind.

When Emie and Erin were little we moved into the Taylor Park ward in Mesa. My neighbor was sent to me straight from Heaven. I was stuck home all day, without a car to get around, with two small children but Shauna was always willing to help. If she didn't have what I needed, she was quick to hop into her car to go get it for me, or sometimes she would just hand me the keys and I would run myself to the store, or do whatever errands I needed to do. Most of all, she helped to keep me sane! I didn't feel so cooped up in my little house, and knew I could get out if I needed to, even though Todd was either at work or school.

Fast forward a few years and another house, to Mesa Crosspointe Ward. What an amazing group of people! I remember so many friends, and so many kindnesses. Most of all, an amazing woman, Glenna Krummenacher--I was in YW with her, and I remember her saying she felt sorry that such a young mom got put together in Mia Maids with an "old grandma". She had raised 9 children, and the youngest was getting ready for a mission. Man, was she an amazing lady! I learned so much from her about children, and mothering, and that time is too short, and before you know it, they will be grown and gone. Man did I need to hear that with now 4 young children! That's what I love about the gospel--it brings friends together who would probably never hang out in real life, but man do we have a lot to learn from eachother!

Next was Bridlegate ward in Gilbert. Talk about a ward full of amazing friends! There were so many talented and amazing women, who I learned so much from. My visiting teaching partner, Heidi Gallant was one of those amazing women. She was so soft spoken, and kind, and loving. She absolutely LOVED being a mom. She reveled in it, and spoke often of her love for her children, and ALL that came with it--even the hard days. She would say, "I made this choice--and I am going to enjoy every minute of this journey." She taught me patience, and for that I was grateful--for with 5 small children now, boy did I need it!

We moved once again to Salt River Ward in Mesa--and I thought there was no way it could be as good of a ward as the one we moved from...boy, was I very wrong! We have truly never met so many good, humble people, in one ward! I was especially grateful to have women right in our neighborhood, and on our street who became cherished and wonderful friends! I had a ward full of amazing women and amazing mothers. I have never seen so many people who would give of themselves to serve others. I didn't have to worry about my children if I were late coming home, I knew that someone would always be willing to help out. I remember only a month or so after moving in, I came down with a kidney infection that was almost unbearable. My fever was a raging 104, and the back pain was so painful I could barely get out of bed. Todd was very busy at work, and couldn't help, and I just remember laying there crying as the kids destroyed the house. Right about that moment Natalie called on the phone, my neighbor who was also my Relief Society President. She was just calling for the heck of it, to see if we needed anything. I was amazed as women from the ward took my children all in, and kept them so I could sleep, and brought them back when Todd was home, along with a hot meal. I could repeat story after story of the love and service that I received in this ward! I can't even name all of the women who were such great friends or it would take another whole post! I felt loved, and accepted, and nurtured by all of those women! Isn't that what the gospel is all about?

Throughout this journey, I have had a few constants--a few friends who have always been there for me. One of those is a friend I made in junior high, Stori. We were 13 when we met, and she is one of the best, kindest, and most amazing women that I know. She has always been willing to listen to me drone on about my problems, my frustrations, my "issues". Since 8th grade she has been there for me, talking at least once a week. She was one of my bridesmaids, came to see me after the birth of each child, and we have grown together along this great journey of marriage and motherhood. We used to joke that we talked to eachother as "free therapy", so that we didn't have to pay a shrink, and we could let out all those things you just can't tell ANYONE else about yourself! We have shared our joys, our fears, our good days, and our bad. She probably knows me better than any person in the world, besides Todd, and somehow she still loves me! I love her so much more than she probably knows--and I'm not sure I could've made it without her on this crazy journey!

The other that comes to mind, is my family--my sisters and Todd's sisters, who are the best friends I could ask for. I always tell my girls "friends change, but families are forever". I have been blessed with such wonderful friends, who happen to also be my family! They have taught me so much, and loved me in spite of my flaws, and my mistakes. I love all of them so much!

In D&C 121:9 it says, "Thy friends do stand by thee, and they shall hail thee again with warm hearts and friendly hands." I am so grateful for a loving Father in Heaven, who has put friends in my path to enrich my life, and to sustain me during the hard times in my life! I am so thankful for the "warm hearts and friendly hands", that have made meals, cared for my children, and given me hugs that were sorely needed. I am thankful that we are here for eachother, and that we are not expected to do it on our own. I am grateful for the friends in the past, and those yet to come, and for the love in my heart for each of you. I just hope that I can be the type of friend that you have been for me! Each of you, and you know who you are--thank you, from the bottom of my heart! I love you!

STUCK!

Photobucket
My scale is stuck! Seriously--it's stuck on stupid.

We have been jogging and training for this 1/2 marathon--running at least 20 miles a week for 3 months now--and do you think that my scale has budged? Ummm...yep--it's gone up and down, between 150.0 and 153. Up and down, week after week. It sits by my toilet--beckoning me. "Come", it says, "just weigh yourself this morning. Surely you lost weight after that 10 mile run." So I make sure to empty my bladder, and strip down to bare bones before I get into the shower, and like a fool I jump on that blasted scale. I can't tell you how many times in the last few months that stupid scale has read exactly 150.0. Even when it read the exact same the day before. I have even resorted to trying to pee a little more to make that retarded scale go down--just one ounce--all I want is for that stupid scale to go to 149.9. Is that too much to ask?? Once I weighed in 3 different times--hoping for at least one reading that was different and all three were 150.0. It's messing with my head, and I sometimes want to throw that thing through the window. I will tell you that I haven't changed my eating habits--but they are no worse then they were pre-jogging, so in my mind if I am running 5 miles a day, and eating the same, shouldn't I LOSE a little weight? Just a little? You always hear of people jogging and losing like hundreds of pounds--why can't I just lose like 2?
Last week I thought for sure I had that scale beat. The day before our 12 mile run--which I blogged about HERE--I weighed in at a whopping 150.6. For sure, that was the day I was going to go below 150. I was gleeful after I jogged for 2 1/2 hours, and sweated, and suffered--because FINALLY I was going to beat that dreaded dumb scale. I got home and was careful to not take a drink of water--even though 12 miles is a LONG time to go without water and I was dying of thirst! I went into my bathroom and got rid of the only water left in my bladder and stripped down for my moment of glory.

151.2

I hate that stupid, dumb, retarded scale.

Happy Halloween 2009!

Halloween was one CRAZY day! We got up at 6 and jogged 12 miles--and you know how much I LOVED that part of the day! When we got home, the girls had church softball, Josh had a soccer game, then we left for the ASU game at 11:30. We stayed at the game until 3--then had to leave to go to our ward Halloween carnival that started at 4:30, but we are on the activities committee so we had to set up, and Todd had to make rootbeer. He went over and did that while I got all the kids ready, which is quite the chore when your 20 month old won't let go of your leg because he pretty much wants to be held anytime I have too much to do to hold him! The all looked adorable though, and I loved their costumes! Here they are:
Baby Jack Sparrow:

Ashlie the "Good Witch"--she didn't want to be a mean witch! (like her mother--HA!)

Josh was a skeleton--and I painted his costume with glow in the dark paint so it would glow while he was trick or treating. It turned out looking so awesome in the dark--it was pretty scary! Too bad he left his mask at school--we spent an hour looking for it--ugh! Still cute!

Abby was a really adorable hippie!

Erin made her fairy costume with her Aunt Kelsey & her cousins who she went trick or treating with--they looked awesome! Thanks Kels!

Emie came up with her costume last minute with her friend McKenna--and they were really cute genies. Yes--they still went trick or treating. I don't see anything wrong with teenagers getting free candy! I would dress up like a teenager to get free candy if I could pull it off! Halloween doesn't stop being fun just because you're 14!

I even managed to get all of them together for a pic!

The carnival was tons of fun! They had hotdogs, ice cream cones, homemade rootbeer, booths, and even a little petting zoo with baby goats that Jack just LOVED! The kids had a blast even though I was worn out! We came home and Todd took the kids trick-or treating while I sat at the house and handed out candy. Problem? I think I ate a piece for each piece I handed out--oops! Good thing I ran today! Here are some pictures of our fun night!

Pumpkin Carving...

We had a great time on Friday night carving pumpkins. The kids did a great job carving their pumpkins with a little help. As they get older it's hard to get them all to be in for this sort of thing--you will notice that the two oldest are missing--one was babysitting, and the other at a friends house. Erin actually carved hers when she got home--but somehow those pictures got erased! Sorry Erin! We had a ton of fun & I think they turned out great!

12 Freakin' Miles!

12 Miles!!!!!!!!
We did it this morning--at 6 a.m..
It sucked.
I hated it.
I whined.
I complained.
I am sore and tired.
I seriously would rather poke a large needle into my eye
than run this race in two weeks!
But WE DID IT!
The End.

A Trip to the Zoo...

Ashlie's preschool class got to go to the zoo this week on Wednesday, so Jack and I tagged along with them! It was a beautiful day, the first chilly day of the year! Seriously--the weather around here has been wacked out! It was 90 the day before--then 60 the very next day for the high! Welcome fall--finally! We got out our sweaters, and hoodies and had a great day with all of Ashlie's friends. Jack's favorite was the giraffes. He loved climbing up on the treehouse thing where you could be at the same height as them. Ashlie loved the monkeys, she especially got a kick out of the baboons. She was like, "Mom, you can totally see their BUTTS!" So funny! Thanks Dawn for the great field trip, and for letting us tag along!

Halloween Recital...

My girls had a Halloween piano recital this week on Thursday that they were just THRILLED about! They were supposed to wear costumes, and get dressed up and play these fun halloween songs. Ummm...yeah, Abby was okay with it, but I literally had to DRAG my teenagers along to the recital, and force them into doing it. They made so many negative comments, that I decided that it's easier to laugh at them than to fight with them. Here are some of the better ones:
"Just shoot me now..."
"I'd rather slit my wrists than be here..."
"I am NOT going in there..."
"There is no one here over 8 wearing a costume..."
"I look SO GAY..."
"This is RETARDED..."
"No, really, just shoot me NOW..."
"Can't I just quit piano...please???"
"I HATE recitals..."
"I hate YOU..."
"Why do you make me do this???"
"Piano is SO stupid..."
"I am SO quitting piano..."

Yeah, this night was a ton of fun for all involved! Someday, my children will look back at this and laugh--then I hope they thank me for putting up with all this crap and not killing them! Seriously--I was like, "you little ingrates--get up there and play your stupid song and quit whining or I might beat the crap out of you!" Actually, I was laughing pretty much the whole night at the situation. Here I am doing something that I don't feel like doing--making my kids do something that they don't feel like doing, because I know it's good for them sometimes to do things they don't want to do. Does that make any sense at all?? The funniest part of the night was when Erin asked if she could take off her tu tu for her fairy costume (that she made--not my creation!) since she didn't feel like any of the kids her age there were dressed up. The problem? All she had on was a t-shirt and a pair of black leggings. Emie leans over and goes, "Yeah, take it off--then you'll look like you came as a hooker." I almost lost it--I was laughing SO hard. Sometimes in these situations--you just have to laugh! Emie was wearing my t-shirt from last year at Halloween that says, "I like being witchy." It was particularly fitting for this situation! Abby was adorable as always, and just going with the flow. Thank goodness for my Abby! All went well, until the next wonderful recital! I love you girls--good job!

Training HARD!!...

A few months ago, Todd's brother--Dr. Greg, announced to the family that he was putting on a race--a half marathon to benefit skin cancer, here in Mesa. It's called Run From the Sun AZ--the website is HERE, and it's on November 14. Those of you who know me, know that I HATE excercise. Todd is the same way, we both have tried every other way to lose weight without having to do the dreaded workout! I have blogged about it so many times...HERE is a good one called "I HATE Excercise!" Anyway, all of our family has sort of been roped into doing this race to support Dr. Greg--(and so we don't get stuck babysitting while the others run the race... ha ha). Todd and I have been "training" for a few months now--and I am proud to say that we have worked up to running 10 miles! While I am proud of this accomplishment, I'm still going to tell you that running is my very LEAST favorite thing to do--STILL. I think it's sweaty, and boring, and tiring, and all together just UGH. Not only that, but I think we are the only people on earth that could log 20 or more miles per week for the last month, and still GAIN weight. People will say "Oh, that's just muscle you're gaining", to make me feel better--but if you read my sugar post you will know that what's bouncing around on my body while we jog 10 miles is NOT muscle! It is fat, fat, and more fat. Todd's brother David has been coming over to jog with us--and I think I've nailed the reason that none of us are losing weight in this adventure... I caught him stretching the other night before our run. Check this out:
Photobucket
Ummm...what is that in his mouth? Could it be? Look a little closer:
Photobucket
Yep...Little Caesar's Pizza!
Photobucket
Not only that, but someone had brought chocolate chip cookies to my girls as well, so he downed a few of those too! Yeah, about mile 1 he was burping those up like crazy! And by mile 4 he might have burned off a cookie or two of his little pre-run snack! You can see that we are doing some SERIOUS TRAINING over here!! I am trying to do better. I waited to eat my cookies until AFTER the run! And they were mmmmm mmmm GOOD!

Emie is 14~!!

I can't believe my teenager is 14!! In fact, I've been in denial for a while now--thus the reason for posting so late! :) Emie is the best firstborn that Heavenly Father could've sent to this home! She is so mellow, and just goes with the flow no matter the situation. Emie always knows just the right thing to say, and the right way to say it, and even when to say nothing, which is a harder thing for some of us in this family! I do have to say that when I mentioned that Joshua had mastered the art of sarcasm at an early age--there was no better teacher for him than Emie! She is so gifted at the art of sarcasm, she can blurt something ridiculous out and keep a perfectly straight and serene expression, and people have no idea that she is completely joking. She definitely gets that from her father--who still manages to fool me sometimes, even after almost 16 years of marriage! All joking aside--I am so proud of this daughter of mine. She is beautiful, and smart, and amazing! I love her so much, and life truly would be miserable without her in our family! She let me take some pictures of her yesterday so I could post them here. I love the way they turned out--she looks so amazing! We love you Em!

14 things we LOVE about Emie:
1. She is smart as a whip--we don't quite know where she gets it, but she is so smart it amazes me! The best thing? She is so humble about it!
2. She is so funny, she says the funniest things, sometimes under her breath, but she can turn a tense situation into a fun one really fast!
3. She is awesome at pretty much anything she tries, now that's amazing!
4. Again, we don't know where she gets it--but she has a beautiful voice, and can sing almost any part, high or low.
5. She is an amazing pianist...I know where she got that one! Thanks to all her teachers over the years--and to Dad for putting up ALL that $$$--but ask Emie, she has had to practice--A LOT!
6. Emie has a great smile! I can't wait for those braces to come off so we see it more!
7. She is a great friend, and extremely loyal. Emie is the type of friend you would love to have. She'll stick by her friends, and she's not a gossiper or a backbiter. I admire that in a person!
8. She is almost done with her YW Recognition--6 projects to go! Making her do all her goals to get her cell phone got her fired up!
9. She is a diligent student--always getting straight A's.
10. She is a night owl like her mother--sometimes I'll go upstairs after midnight, and her light is still on, and she'll be trying on clothes and stuff--crazy girl!
11. She loves to sleep in--hmmm...do these two go together??
12. Emie doesn't talk back, she is very respectful--most of the time!
13. She LOVES her family, and takes good care of her brothers and sisters. She is a great babysitter.
14. She is the BEST daughter anyone could ever ask for! I love you Emie!
