Abby's Science Project!...

This year was our first try at a science project!  Somehow, with Emie and Erin we got out of doing one--but Abby came home and announced that her school was doing a 5th grade science fair and BOY do you get excited as a parent to "help" them do it!  Okay--so I kinda had a bad attitude about it, because it's something, well, extra--and extra things are hard in this house because I feel like I am hanging on by the fingernails sometimes  to the last bit of sanity I have left with how busy our life is.  It's not that I don't want to do fun things--but sometimes it's HARD to fit extra things in.  Lucky for me--we have a fabulous family who is willing to help out--and I have an incredible daughter who seriously did this project on her own for the most part!  We decided to do her project on the damage that the sun does to your skin as you age.  Uncle Dr. Greg has this AWESOME piece of equipment down at Deseret A & L (Aesthetic & Lifestyle Institute--a.k.a. his office) called a Beau Visage Camera.  This camera takes a picture of your skin a few millimeters below the surface and can show you the damage that the sun has done on your skin, and also what it will look like in a few years if you don't do something about it.  We went down to his office, and they took pictures of all of us so we could show that as you age, your skin becomes more damaged by the sun.  It was neat to see, and really makes you sad that you didn't use sunscreen--especially during those teenage years!  Abby did a great job writing her project up, and then explaining her hypothesis and conclusion to people as they came and asked her about her project.  She also wore the "Shun the Sun" T-shirt to advertise for her uncle who was so great to help us with the project! Thanks Dr. Greg!  We love you! Here are a few pics!

Dr. Greg has really taken this mission to heart, and started his own foundation--Shun the Sun foundation to raise money to fight skin cancer, and provide shade structures for poorer schools in the city who can't afford them.  You can read more about the Shun the Sun Foundation and Deseret A & L  HERE or HERE--as well as about the race they are putting on in a few weeks!  Todd will be running the 1/2 marathon, but there is also a 5K and a Fun Run--something for everyone!
